The Houston Texans drafted defensive end J.J. Watt 11th overall in April's draft. Before attending Wisconsin University in 2008 he played tight end for one year at Central Michigan. After being redshirted the previous season, Watt would play his 2009 and 2010 campaign as a defensive end.
At 6'5 288 pounds, J.J. Watt can become a very destructive force apart of a 2nd ranked Houston defense who finished 6th in total sacks with 44 for the season. The capability of this destruction was most noticed against the Bengals last Saturday when Watt leaped over an offensive lineman to snatch a pass out of the air and rumble 29 yards towards the end zone. The Texans went on to defeat the Bengals 31-10. The former 2010 All-American was recorded at the NFL Combine with a 34 inch arm length and a 37 inch vertical. Those tools are certainly being put to good use now.
J.J. Watt 2011 Draft Scouting Report from FFToolbox: http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?prospect_id=2727
Not only was Watt able to capture revenge versus Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton for losing to him in the Rose Bowl in 2010 but he's showing the NFL that his toughness and work ethic will have to be reckoned with for years to come. You can only imagine the work he must have put in to be playing defensive end at a high level for only two years in college.
Watt ranked 2nd among rookie defensive lineman in the regular season and 13th among all other defensive lineman. On Sunday, he will be facing Ravens right tackle Michael Oher who has yet to give up a sack this season. In the last contest between the Texans and Ravens Watt only recorded 3 tackles and didn't get to quarterback Joe Flacco once.
Although he was sacked twice and hit eight times, Flacco was still able to make plays. He led the Ravens on a 97 yard drive in their opening possession and went 7 for 8 with 82 passing yards. His 1-yard TD run was the first score given up by the Texans this season in the first quarter. It's an encouraging stat for the Texans defense to remember. The Ravens offensive line is ranked 12th which is one spot above the Texans' line and gave up 33 sacks with 78 hits on the quarterback.
As stated above in the scouting report, J.J must improve his understanding of offenses as well as work on shedding blocks which shown by his improved ability to get to the quarterback is definitely coming along. His athleticism and sheer drive to make a play are what will continue to help him cause havoc versus offensive lines. The rookie's gets a chance on Sunday afternoon to showcase how much his skills have really improved against a Ravens team that finished 8-0 at home this season. Added to this is the battle that will take place between the rookie and third year tackle Oher. Who will get the better hand?
To be continued.....
